In this quick tip tutorial, we are going to take a closer look at the Pencil Tool in Affinity Designer. The Pencil Tool allows you to create freehand vector drawings that have a more organic feel than those created with the other shape building tools. First things first, where is the Pencil tool? On both the desktop and iPad versions of the app, it is represented by… you guessed it… a pencil icon, which can be found in the tool bar at the side of both apps.
On the iPad version, click the "? As you draw, nodes are added to your canvas, creating your freehand shape. You can create your drawing as a stroke, fill or both. The shapes you create with the Pencil tool can easily be adjusted with the Node Tool. As you click around, the red square follows you. To close a curve, click on the first node you created. When you hover over that node, a little circle will appear beneath the pen.
Fortunately, you can create a smooth curve with your pen tool. You can also create a curve with all sharp nodes, and change those to smooth nodes with the pen tool. If you want to change a node from being smooth to sharp, i.

These are just lines at the moment as I'm trying to trace a picture. So is there no way of joining 2 nodes together to form one shape or do you have to trace it with the pen tool in one complete go which i'm finding awkward with detailed areas? There is a way, but you would need to "expand curve".
However, after you expand stroke you will not have the same control if you plan to change it at a later point:. I only need an image at the end of the trace, I'll adjust and sort before doing that.
